The Angels are looking down from heaven above as the promising 24-year-old Team Italy pitcher takes the mound in Anaheim on Friday, June 12th at 6:38 pm (Saturday, June 13th at 3:38 am in Italy) against the American League East division-leading Tampa Bay Rays. Sam Aldegheri (1-1, 12 IP, 8 K, 2.25 ERA) is optimistic that a new cutter is just what the doctor ordered to remain on the Angels’ big-league roster. The Italian-born and developed pitcher from Verona recently added a cut fastball to his repertoire and has seen excellent results as a result. On June 2nd against the Colorado Rockies, Halos’ lefty Sam Aldegheri threw 5 1/3 scoreless innings (4 H, 2 BB, 5 K) in relief of starter Grayson Rodriguez.
A month earlier on May 5th against the Chicago White Sox, Angels starting pitcher Sam Aldegheri bounced back after a tough first inning and threw a total of four innings, allowing two runs on four hits and two walks during his 69-pitch outing. In his first 2026 MLB season appearance on April 16th against the New York Yankees in the Bronx, he earned the win despite surrendering one run on two hits over 1 2/3 innings with two strikeouts.
Sam Aldegheri made his World Baseball Classic debut for Team Italy in the opening game against Brazil on March 7th at Daikin Park in Houston. He threw 4 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and two walks while striking out eight batters. His fastball/changeup combo was unhittable against Brazil, as he registered 10 swings and misses with the changeup and six with his four-seamer He threw a total of 63 pitches and left the game in a scoreless tie before the Azzurri bullpen secured an 8-0 shutout victory. Aldegheri’s performance was monumental for Italian baseball since he is the first pitcher born and raised in Italy to reach MLB. Forza #Italia!
